Sunday, March 17, 2024, the Rome Marathon returns, the fascinating foot race with start and finish in Via dei Fori Imperiali.
The “Run Rome The Marathon” is the largest running event in Italy, which winds its way along the classic length of 42.195 km, crossing the historic places of Rome.
The 2024 edition will be the 29th edition of the city event.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, Rome has been the destination of a marathon. The most important event was certainly the marathon held during the 1960 Rome Olympics, where Abebe Bikila won by running barefoot.
In 1995, the marathon was reorganized and took on its current form.
This led to the first edition in which Belayneh Tadesse, from Ethiopia, won the men’s category, while the Russian Elena Sipatova excelled in the women’s category.

It reaches the Viale del Foro Italico and arrives in Piazza Navona to the south, passing the Pantheon and then arriving at Piazza di Spagna, dominated by the famous Spanish Steps leading to Trinità dei Monti.
Minor streets lead to the Trevi Fountain, in a pedestrian area paved with cobblestones that is the most tortuous stretch of the marathon.
The route leads to the Pyramid of Cestius and then to the Colosseum along the Viale dei Fori Imperiali, until it reaches the finish line.
The collateral event to the Rome marathon is mainly the “Fun Run La Stracittadina”, the largest non-competitive event in Italy with peaks of up to 80,000 participants.
The starting point is always at the Imperial Forums and the finish line inside the Circus Maximus, after about 5 km enhanced by music and solidarity. Numerous families with children or friends participate in the event, both walking and running. Between smiles and chats, the rhythm is free and you arrive at the finish line with a great sense of happiness.
