• Palazzo Budini Gattai: situated in the center of Florence, a short distance from the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, the palazzo is famous for the story of the young, newly wedded Grifonis. Just after their wedding, the groom was called to arms, never to return. The bride, for the rest of her life, waited for the return of her husband, watching out for him through a window whilst she embroidered. The day after she died, her relatives tried to close the shutters to the window but the bride’s ghost objected: she shook the furniture and caused power surges. No one ever tried to close the shutters again. Even today, if you pass by the building, you’ll see the shutters of that window still ajar;
  
  
• The burning of Girolamo Savonarola: this is a much more famous event and is studied at school in Italy. We can take a tour of Florence and reach the plaque placed in the Piazza della Signoria, in memory of the burning which happened on May 23, 1498. The friar was held in the Torre d’Arnolfo where he was tortured all night. The next morning, he was hanged and his body burned in front of the attending crowd;
  
  
• The coat of arms of Via Panicale: on a building on Via Panicale, next to the Chiesa di Sant’Orsola in Florence, we can admire the coat of arms sculpted in 1307. That year, Pope Clement V ordered the soldiers to “cleanse” the land of the Templars who were accused of worshiping the devil. The coat of arms is at the entrance to the Benedictine monastery. And, according to many scholars, the inscriptions engraved on the coat of arms hide a formula for exorcisms;
  
  
• San Salvi’s asylum: the citadel of San Salvi was the psychiatric hospital in Florence from 1890 to 1998. Abuse and oppression were visited on the innocent victims within. Because they were different, they were tortured, subjected to unspeakable violence and unjustly punished. Many were driven insane.

We find it here in Lunigiana. Within its walls many claim to have seen the spirit of Bianca Maria Aloisia. She fell in love with a stable boy and was buried alive by her father, together with a dog and a wild boar;
  
  
• Villa Mansi: this spectacular building in Capannori is home to the soul of Lucida Mansi, a daughter born into a noble family from Lucca. According to legend, she killed her lovers by having them thrown into a ditch covered in sharp blades. Completely taken by her looks, she made a pact with a young man who promised her thirty years of youth in exchange for her soul. Behind this man was the devil himself who, in 1646, presented himself to Lucida and took her back to hell with him. Many people claim to have seen Lucida’s ghost wandering around the villa. Others report to have seen her sleeping face reflected in the pond of the botanical gardens of Lucca, where the devil’s fiery carriage disappeared;
  
  
• Villa Medicea in Cerreto Guidi: this ancient hunting lodge, once owned by Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Isabella de’ Medici. The daughter of the Duke and of Eleonora di Toledo and wife to Duke Paolo Giordano Orsini died in Cerreto on the night of July 15, 1576. According to legend, she was killed by assassins on her husband’s orders;
  
  
• Villa del Cotone: we find, in Empoli, a building from the 1400s, linked to the story of Emma. The little girl was burned alive in 1600 in front of the chapel and then buried.
