• Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and the Pazzi Conspiracy: two places, symbolic of Florence, were the backdrop to an attempt to overthrow the House of Medici in 1478. The coup was unsuccessful and the perpetrators were hanged from the windows of Palazzo Vecchio. Twenty years later, Girolamo Savonarola was imprisoned and tortured in the Torre di Arnolfo and, the next morning, was hanged and burned in the Piazza della Signoria;
  
  
• The stone head in the wall: we can see a curious stone head that protrudes from the wall of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore. Legend would have it that a woman watched as a man was sentenced to death and was dragged into the Piazza Santa Croce to be executed. The woman shouted to the crowd not to give the man something to drink and he then turned her to stone;
  
  
• The window of the Palazzo Budini Gattai: in the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata we find a window in this building which is always open. Legend says that it’s because of the ghost of a young woman whose husband never returned from war. She spent her entire life waiting for his return, watching from this very window, until she died. The day after her death, her relatives tried to close the window but the woman’s ghost would not allow it. Furniture shook, books flew from the shelves and paintings fell from the walls. Since then, the window has never been closed.
